View Full Version : Need Volunteers

Hi Everybody,

We need volunteers to monitor and update the news and
events of recognized organizations.

I personnelly request the members to come in the front
line, who can monitor the updates of
organizations.

We need to make a list of organizations to be monitored
in our website. We also need a list of volunteers. To split the
task and reduce the workload, each (or a small group) of
volunteer will be assigned to monitor each organizations.

Fellows who are ready to participate, please report below
this post.

Confusion ???

For example, CLIVAR will be monitored in our website by
members "abc", "xyz" and "ijkl" (sample members).
These members will be responsible to visit CLIVAR website
(in a reasonable frequency) and update the news and events
there into our website.

Attention Moderators: I put this plan into the website directly
without having a discussion among us (moderators). I think this
transparency for this particular plan will not affect our policy on decision
making.

Hope to see replies to this post

-Vinu

I appreciate the willingness of MoHDa to participate in
"Monitoring Orginizations (MO)" team.

You may chose any one of the following organizations.

WMO (World Meteorological Orginizations)

CLIVAR (Climate Variability and predictability)

GOOS (Global Ocean Observing System)

WOCE (World Ocean Circulation Experiment)

Apart from these, if you are concerned with some other
organizations, then you may choce it yourself.

The duties
=======

We expect to get the latest developments, events and news of these
organizations from our website. You may visit websites of curresponding
organizations and monitor the informations here, preferably in your own writings.

If you use the contents of the other website to reproduce here,
please show the parent link where you have obtained it.

How to do
=======

You may start a new post in Ocean News with subject line as
the Title of the Organization. In future (not so far) we may open
new sub-forums inside the Ocean news to represents each
organizations (if it all worked). I take the responsibility to contact the
Administrator and other moderators to open new
sub-forums.

I expect more members come to this team.

hi vinu, it is good to redistribute the jobs and have some moderators for the ocean news section.

Maybe we should give 2-3 scientific websites to a news moderator and gather information from there. Also, we should not do it as an update of all news but those which could be relevant to a greater percentage of the members here. If we put a lot of news, the news forums may get filled with a lot of info, out of which the relevant news may get missed.. Well as you say if we have sub-forums, such a factor can be solved to some extent.

Then, should we categorize the news based on topic or organizations, or both? What is your idea?

note about images displayed with news on front page: if the images are larger than 550 pixels width, the middle column gets enlarged and the left n right columns get shrinked, for a 1024 x 768 resolution monitor.

Hi Rocksea,

Following are my concern

1) I suggest, one organization per each member in the MO team.
This may give the right focus and less workload to its
volunteers.

This plan is more like to broadcaste the activities of each organizations
in our website, rather than we recruite a few News Forum moderators.

Also, we should not do it as a regular update of all news but those which could be relevant to a greater percentage of the members here.
2) I think, there will not be much to update from an organization.
It will be mostly in the form a limited size, like workshop announcements,
general body meetings and its decisions,
release of new data sets, planning of new obseravtional arrays etc, which
re-occures in a low frequency. So in my opinion, an overflow is less likely.
As a remedy, and a quick action of implementation, I recommend,
to begin the monitoring, and observe it for one month. If such a problem
of overflow exist we may implement a criteria to regulate it.

Then, should we categorize the news based on topic or organizations, or both? What is your idea?

I think, based on organizations is more appropriate. In that way, we
achieve an implicit topical categorization, because each organization is
focussing on finite objectives, although not the one like
WMO. Another point is, this is much easier to do.

Hello, I think that the best is the idea of vinu, that each of the volunteers choose one organization and transfer here the news.

I prefere the goos. If anybody else wants it also, i could choose another organization.

In addition to that, as I work at GKSS (www.gkss.de) I could transfer the news of the institute.

Hi MoHDa,

Your choice is appropriate and nobody else come with a
priority on that.

Please start monitoring GOOS in our website. It is great if
you could take additional responsibility to tranfer ocean related
news from other source/s you are involved in.

For the time being, start with a fresh post with title whcih
includes the Organization name.

Hope to find more members to show up as volunteer.

Hi Everybody,

We have started Monitoring Organizations with a single volunteer now.
MoHDa is in charge of monitoring GOOS and we are now able to read
"what is going on with GOOS", from our website.

We expect more volunteers to come to join this team to monitor
another organizations in our list.

We request the members to put their efforts on this.
It will help to increase the number of representatives for the website
and tasks will be widely distributed rather than
centered on few moderators. So a participation from other
members in this team will be highly appreciated.

PS: Read above posts to find "What is monitoring an
organization"

Hi everybody,

Responses to take part in Monitoring Organizations
sessions are dead. Only one member shown up interest and started the
duty already.

On this crisis, I take responsibility to monitor one
organization. I choose CLIVAR to monitor here.

This is a good opportunity for members to take part actively in our website.
All you need is to visit the organization websites and monitor
the news/developements/events in our website.

I request members to take part this session. A list of
organizations to be covered are given below (list is incomplete,
more suggestions are welcome).

WMO (World Meteorological Orginizations)

CLIVAR (Climate Variability and predictability)

WOCE (World Ocean Circulation Experiment)

and more ...

Hi Hariprasadh,

Nice to see your interest to take part in MO team.

Read the first post in this series (the previous post as well).
There you may find the details and purpose of this team.
Also there is a list of organizations provided.

You may pick one of them and visit their website for the
latest news, activities and announcements and post it
in our website, preferably in your own
writings (a simple style is very much ok because, What we need is, only
to know what is going on latest with these organizations).

For your information, the organizations GOOS and CLIVAR are
already occupied. It is also in our concern to expand the list
by including more organizations and we hope do it soon.

If you copy/reproduce the contents of other website exactly in the same form,
you should specify the link from where you have obtained it.

How to do
=======

Begin a new thread in the "Ocean News" forum, with subject
as "Organization Name". (See the threads GOOS or CLIVAR
in the Ocean News section for an example).

The organizations listed above are only few. If you
have interest in any other organizations, you can come forward
with with your suggestion and choose a organization yourself.

Ask me if you need further assistantship in this.

PS: address me just 'vinu' from here onwards.

-Thanks
