i am a new in ocean field, i don't know ie my question is." When a wave propagate through ocean or sea surface what is the energy does it posses when it directly incident on the shore ? i want the equation for that?
plz help me?

Hi,

There are two types of energy associated with ocean waves; kinetic energy (K.E.) and potential energy (P.E.). In simple, K.E. is associated with the wave celerity (velocity) and P.E. is associated with wave height. In deep waters, both the energies are in the ratio 1:1, i.e, the total energy is equally divided into K.E. and P.E.. As the wave propgates, this will remain almost in the same ratio until it 'feels the bottom'. When it comes to the shallow waters, due to bottom effects the wave celerity will reduce, hence the K.E. will also reduce. To conserve the total energy its P.E. must increase, it can be happen by the increase of wave height. When waves tend to break, the P.E.associated with the wave is at its maximum,and it will suddenly transform into K.E. while hitting on the shore.

The energy is directly proportional to the square of the wave height. The equation reads: E = (1/8).row.g.saquare(H), where H is the wave height, g- acceleration due to gravity and 'row' is the density of sea water.
